South Hill Walkway

The main natural features of this walkway are the tall and unusual smelling pine trees, the common shrubbery, and the coastal/scenic views that are seen coming down from Lookout Point. While you are walking down through the beautiful New Zealand bush, fantails flutter and bellbirds sing.

The grounds and parks on the walkway are kept clean and green looking, although some of the tracks can be a bit slippery at times, so care is needed. The council provides signs to explain things like the length of the walk (1 hour approx), features seen on the walk (historic buildings, native New Zealand bush, etc) and a map of the walk.

The South Hill Walkway starts up at the Lookout Point. A great view of the town and of the ocean will be seen there. At King George Park there is a set of swings, the cricket club building and field of grass where many people spend their Saturday mornings playing cricket (or soccer in the winter!) Heading down to the Historic Precinct, a sign will be seen. It directs you to the penguin colony, which is yet another one of Oamaru’s great attractions. In the “old part of town” there are many shops that are open for all to have a little snoop around in. In the shops there are many great collections of antiques. The walk concludes at Takaro Park, which is now where the Oamaru Aquatic Centre is.

Many people have contributed to this walk to make it so beautiful. Some of these people are:

  • gardeners who keep the lawns and trees healthy looking,
  • lime stone workers who keep the Oamaru stone looking as good as new,
  • carpenters to craft some seats and benches so you can rest along the way,
  • the Waitaki District Council, which provides rubbish bins throughout the walk.

Unfortunately the South Hill walkway does not have a sponsor so it isn't promoted. However, there are brochures that are available to pick up at the Visitors Information Centre.

The South Hill Walkway is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and is a great experience.
