Port Heritage Walkway |
|
The Port Heritage Walk starts at the Itchen Street Diary and ends at the Penguin Viewing Platform. The environmental features include plants on the track side, which can be damaged by people walking over them. There is also Friendly Bay where you can walk out on Holmes Wharf. There are adverts on the wharves telling you to slow down due to penguins crossing. The main features are the little blue penguins, and there is a pavement where you can view the penguins nesting boxes from. There are plenty of rubbish bins so you don't have any excuse to throw rubbish in the sea. Other features you will see on this track are historic buildings made from Oamaru Stone, the first shopping mall in Oamaru, and the homes and houses of people who live on the South Hill. For the first part of the walk, you are on footpaths until you reach the wharf, where it changes to gravel. The track is suitable for most fitness levels as it is reasonably flat and downhill. People in wheel chairs would find the gravel difficult. If you go at a nice steady pace it takes one and a half hours to complete, and is good if you want to get fit. If you want to have a picnic for lunch, you can go to the wharf and go fishing. If you want to you can carry on and do the Graves track at the end. |
